Automatic litter boxes

The most expensive thing you will buy for a cat. Worth it for several, overkill for one.

Litter-Robot 4

Best for: multi-cat homes and anyone who wants to deal with the box monthly instead of daily

The one everything else is compared to. It takes ordinary clumping litter, which is the whole argument against the crystal-tray machines - no proprietary refill, no subscription creep. The sealed drawer genuinely holds a month for one or two cats. Two honest caveats reviewers repeat: the safety sensors are calibrated for adult weight, so kittens under about five pounds should not use one, and litter dust builds up in the base over months. Automatic means automatic scooping, not automatic ownership.

Verdict: The best long-term value if you have several cats and will still clean it monthly.

PetSafe ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box

Best for: one cat, and someone who would rather bin a tray than empty a drawer

A rake pushes waste into a covered end of a disposable crystal tray and you throw the whole thing away. Genuinely less handling than any drawer system, and much cheaper up front than a Litter-Robot. The cost lands later: a tray every two to three weeks is effectively a subscription, and it adds up past the price difference within a couple of years. Crystal litter also suits some cats and not others, and you cannot switch.

Verdict: Cheaper to buy, more expensive to own. Fine for one cat.
