Sherpa Original Deluxe Pet Carrier

Best for: flying, and vet trips where the cat should not have to be tipped out

Soft-sided with a spring wire frame so it squashes to fit under a seat, which is the reason it keeps being recommended for air travel - check the size against your airline, they differ. Top and side openings both matter at the vet: a cat that will not come out can be lifted rather than tipped. The mesh is the weak point over years with a determined scratcher.

Verdict: The default soft carrier. Check your airline's dimensions first.

Petmate Two Door Top Load Kennel

Best for: vet visits, and a cat that fights being put into a carrier

Hard plastic, which is easier to clean than fabric after a bad journey - the thing nobody thinks about until it happens. The top door is the real feature: you lower the cat in rather than pushing it through a front hole, and vets can lift the top off entirely with an anxious cat still sitting in the base. Bulky to store and not airline sized.

Verdict: The one to own for the vet. Not the one to fly with.
